Keller Citizen Fire Academy
&
Community Emergency Response Team

August 25 - October 27, 2005

In response to the increasing awareness of homeland security, the Keller Fire Rescue Department has implemented a Citizen Fire Academy. In conjunction with this class we are also expanding it to include training and credentialing for our Community Emergency Response Team, aka "CERT".

The goal of this project is to involve the local residents in the inner-workings of fire fighting, emergency medical services and emergency management. Additional goals include expanding the emergency response capabilities within our community to natural or man made disasters by functionally preparing and equipping residents to respond when local emergency services are overwhelmed.

Why have such an academy?

  • To inform citizens about how their emergency services work in their community
  • To prepare interested individuals to cope with emergency situations
  • To build bridges of cooperation and understanding with local government
  • To foster lasting relationships and improve customer service
  • Knowing what your emergency services are doing to better protect the community will give insights not previously available to the general public by having "hands-on" experience in many different simulated emergency situations.
  • Better meet the emergency response needs of the community during a crisis situation.

Who is eligible to attend?

Current residents of the City of Keller, or persons currently employed and working within the city limits of Keller, who are 21 years of age or older are eligible to apply to attend.

When and where are the classes?

Classes are scheduled in roughly two-hour blocks with meetings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays. There are three Saturday classes that will either involve field operations or a longer class period. Classes will usually be held at the Keller Fire-Rescue Administrative offices or at Fire Station #2 unless noted otherwise.

For a class/course schedule please click "Class Schedule".

What will I learn?

The course covers the basic organization and history of the department as well as most everything that you would like to know about fire prevention/investigation/suppression and emergency medical services/rescue operations.

The CERT portion of the class covers basic disaster response skills such as:

* Fire safety/extinguishment
* Light search and rescue
* Disaster medical operations
* Team organization

Do I have to fight fire?

All activities are optional. You may be as involved as you wish but are not required to do anything you do not feel comfortable doing.

If this sounds like something you'd like to do, or you would like some additional information, please stop by the Fire Administration building at 110 West Vine St. Keller Texas, or call Marcia Lyle at Fire Administration, (817) 743-4400.

Marcia, our Records Manager, also happens to be a proud graduate of KCCFA, Class #1, and can answer many of your questions.

If you already know that you would be interested in attending the next hosting of the academy then you may download, compelete and return an application by clicking "Candidate Application".
